AI, Machine Learning & Deep Learning

Definition: These three terms are often mixed up. They are nested: Machine Learning is a part of AI, and Deep Learning is a part of Machine Learning.

Think of three circles, one inside the other

  • Artificial Intelligence — the big idea: machines doing smart things.
  • Machine Learning (ML) — the main way we build AI today: instead of programming rules by hand, we let the computer learn patterns from examples.
  • Deep Learning — a powerful kind of ML that uses "neural networks" (loosely inspired by the brain). It powers image recognition, voice, and modern chatbots.

The key shift: from rules to learning

Old software followed rules a human wrote: "if the email contains this word, mark it spam." Machine Learning flips that. You show it thousands of spam and non-spam emails, and it works out the patterns itself — often catching things no human rule would.

💡 Takeaway: when people say "AI" today, they almost always mean Machine Learning, and often Deep Learning specifically.
