Data: The Fuel of AI
Definition: Data is the examples an AI learns from. Without good data, even the best AI fails — which is why data is often called the fuel (or the new oil) of AI.
Why data matters so much
An AI model is shaped entirely by what it sees during training. Feed it clean, relevant, representative data and it performs well. Feed it messy, biased, or incomplete data and it fails — confidently. The phrase to remember is "garbage in, garbage out."
What makes data good?
- Quantity — generally, more examples help
- Quality — accurate, clean, correctly labelled
- Relevance — matches the real task
- Representativeness — covers the variety the AI will meet in the real world
The privacy side
Because AI needs data, how that data is collected and used raises real privacy questions. Good organisations are transparent about what they collect and protect it carefully.
💡 Takeaway: when an AI behaves badly, the cause is usually the data, not the algorithm.
