Set Constraints and Tone
Principle: Constraints are limits you place on the answer — length, tone, reading level, what to include or avoid. They keep the output on target.
Length and structure
- "In no more than 50 words"
- "Exactly 5 bullet points"
- "One short paragraph"
Tone and audience
Tone set
Explain what a mortgage is in a warm, encouraging tone, for someone who finds finance intimidating. Avoid jargon; if you must use a term, define it.
Tell it what to avoid
Negative constraints are just as useful as positive ones:
- "Do not use technical jargon"
- "Avoid clichés and filler"
- "Do not include an introduction; start with the steps"
Keep constraints realistic
Too many rules at once can conflict and confuse the model. Start with the two or three that matter most, then refine.
💡 Tip: "start directly with the answer, no preamble" is a great constraint for cutting the fluff many AIs add at the start.
