Common Mistakes to Avoid

Goal: Knowing the traps is half the skill. Avoid these and your results improve immediately.

1. Being too vague

"Help me with my essay" gives the AI nothing to work with. Say what kind of help, on what topic, for what level.

2. Asking for too much at once

A single prompt demanding research, an outline, a full draft, and a title page will do all of them poorly. Break big jobs into steps.

3. No format or constraints

Without "in 5 bullets" or "under 100 words", you get whatever length the model feels like. State the shape you want.

4. Trusting the answer blindly

AIs can state wrong facts with total confidence. Verify names, numbers, dates, quotes, and anything important before you rely on it.

5. Giving up after one try

The first answer is a starting point. Refine it. The people who get great results are the ones who iterate.

6. Forgetting the audience

An answer written for an expert and one for a beginner look completely different. Always say who it is for.

💡 Quick fix: when an answer disappoints, re-read your prompt and ask which of these six you slipped into.
